Blend with yoghurt or coconut milk and freeze to make healthy ice cream.

Red Onion:

Good source of biotin, which is important for balancing blood sugar and skin health.
One of the richest sources of all vegetables for polyphenols; plant chemicals known to keep our hearts and blood vessels healthy, reduce inflammation and risk of cancer.
Richest nutrients are closest to the outside so peel off as little as possible to get maximum benefit.

Pink Grapefruit:

Rich source of Vitamin C so great for immunity and wound healing and helps protect against cancer.
High in a plant chemical called lycopene, an excellent antioxidant shown to protect against cancer and especially good for men as known to keep prostates healthy.
Surprisingly some children like the sour taste of grapefruit, make it fun by watching each other ‘wiggle’ after a mouth full!

Blue, Purple & Pink Week

Radishes:

Known to help the liver detoxify efficiently, so prevent build-up of toxins.
A good source of anthocyanins, plant chemicals that gives the pink/purple colour. Many studies have shown these protect our cells from damage and have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties.

Aubergines:

A good source of fibre for healthy digestion and helping get toxins out of the body. Useful for constipation.
They contain a plant chemical called nasunin (in the skin), which has been found in studies to protect brain cell membranes.

Blueberries:

Butternut Squash:

Good source of manganese – important for skin and bone health and an antioxidant.
Very high levels of beta-carotene.
Makes a tasty soup with onion and red lentils for extra nutrition.

Orange Pepper:

Orange peppers are an excellent source of Vitamin C (even higher than oranges!) so great for immunity and wound healing and helps protect against cancer.
High pepper intake protects against cancer.
Roast in the oven to intensify the sweetness and make it more appealing to children who don’t like the cold wet sensation of food.

Oranges:

Good source of fibre for healthy digestion.
Source of calcium for strong bones, teeth and the nervous system.
Get children involved in squeezing a fresh orange and tasting the juice.

Swede:

Contain a variety of B vitamins, for energy production and brain chemistry.
Great mashed to top a fish or shepherd’s pie.

Chickpeas:

An amazing source of soluble fibre, which helps balance cholesterol in the body, nourish the wall of the gut and keeps things moving along the digestive tract.
Excellent source of manganese – important for skin and bone health and an antioxidant.
Hummus is great food to encourage in little ones, in a sandwich/on toast or with carrot sticks to dip.

Apricot:

Rich in plant chemicals known as carotenoids and flavonoids; known to be anti-inflammatory, protect cells from cancer and heart disease, and repair cells.
Also contains xanthophylls which protect the eyesight.
Dried apricots are a good variation to raisins, use brown ones (preservative free).

Green Week

The Spinach:

Baby spinach is in season and packed full of nutrients. The greener, the better!
Super source of Vitamin K, important for clotting our blood if we should have an injury and to help with bone formation.
Add small amounts of chopped up spinach to home made lasagne or shepherds pie.

Sugar Snap Peas:

Contain lots of Vitamin C ; good for immunity and collagen in skin so important in eczema and coping with stress.
Source of lots of B vitamins, great for energy and brain function.
Great food for ‘who can crunch the loudest’ competition!

Pears:

Excellent source of fibre for good digestion and helping get toxins out of the body. It’s a particularly easy fruit to digest, which makes it an excellent food for babies and those with digestive problems.
The skins of pears have been found to have 3x higher levels of antioxidant than the flesh.
Grate and stir into porridge for a healthy extra to your breakfast.
